By Nick Allen July 20, 2019 | Boldness is a facet that comes within the DNA of a lot of movies programmed at Fantasia, especially as rising filmmakers use their independence to tell a genre story in a different way. That’s especially the case with two thrillers making their the world premieres at the Montreal festival, both being projects that are defined by the risks its storytellers are willing to make.   The first stroke of brilliance within Matthew Pope’s exceptionally confident debut “ Blood on Her Name ” is how it kicks off its neo-noir as a “why-dunit, ” after making it unmistakable about the who (a woman named Leigh), where (a car repair shop) and what (a skull-cracking murder). From this opening sequence, which starts with a pool of blood and a corpse on the ground, the script by Pope and Don M. Thompson thinks forward—a lot of other storytellers would use this as means to go to a flashback, but this movie excitingly tackles its crime in the present, building its tension out of what happens next and carefully, naturally painting a full backstory in the process. The story's only flashbacks are for Leigh as she reflects upon being at a similar moral crossroads during her childhood, a traumatic event that motivates all of her current decisions. Advertisement This is where Bethany Anne Lind’s visceral performance as Leigh takes over, playing someone who has committed the unthinkable and is yet trying to hold all of it together in front of her son (Jared Ivers), her dirty cop father ( Will Patton), and Rey (Jimmy Gonzales), the repair shop owner. Lind gives an incredibly vivid sense of the turmoil within Leigh, especially as she’s at a loss about what to do with the body, and how to clear up any of her tracks. In a sharp storytelling manner in which no scene or piece of dialogue feels spared, “Blood on Her Name” takes us step by step through her emotional journey. All the while, Lind keeps us on edge, and we deeply feel her struggle of trying to be a good person in a whole mess of bad.   It’s not just Leigh—all of the characters here are pushed to a tangible edge, and at the same time you believe that they have the capacity to point a gun at someone and perhaps take a life, especially as part of the resounding theme of parents protecting their children by any means necessary. Within this script’s lean and mean course of events, the consequences are generational, and the morality is gorgeously complicated.   This is the kind of original storytelling that takes after the greats—I love the previous comparisons that my colleague Katie Rife made with the likes of “ Blue Ruin ” and “ Cold in July, ” and would add the likes of “ Blood Simple ” and “ One False Move, ” those two titles in particular helping pronounce the ingenuity of their respective writers and directors in an unforgettable way. I can only imagine the same will happen for the people behind “Blood on Her Name”—they’ve quickly defined themselves as storytellers who get down and dirty with inspired original ideas, and can orchestrate spectacular genre entertainment in the process.   Writer/director David Marmor’s “ 1BR ” starts off without much promise, but gets much better once its inspired narrative decision takes full control. Before then, though, it’s dangerously bland visually and story-wise almost to the point of parody, following a young woman named Sarah (Nicole Brydon Bloom) who moves into an apartment complex in Los Angeles. She’s too obviously a horror screenwriter’s idea of fresh meat—a self-proclaimed daddy’s girl, with an interest in study fashion that’s distracted from with a thankless job in a cubicle. Her world is composed of other queasy creations, like a friend at work whose sole purpose is to either ask her questions or be sassy, or one new apartment neighbor who always leers at her with a sheepish look with an eyepatch. As Sarah starts to hear strange sounds at night in her new one bedroom apartment, there’s not a lot of hope that what’s behind the walls could be all that enticing. But “1BR” is worth sticking around for when it gets to its main horror, a Scientology-like cult that consumes the residents and makes them part of a mini-utopia that’s truly unsettling. With confident direction, Marmor takes viewers through the step-by-step process of how Sarah is broken and then ingratiated into this cult that preaches about selflessness and community, while never making it clear where the next scene is going to take us.   The movie also shows a tactfully nasty side, even just by teasing grotesque violence that’s a part of initiation, but also its sincerity to the focal cult, whose intent is more complicated than cultivating evil. Instead of “1BR” playing out in a way that feels average, it takes the bolder route of immersing us in the horror of losing free-will, while Bloom’s nimble, frightened and then submissive performance does not lose sight of the woman she once was before she started to accept the ways of the group. All of this boldness pays off—the film’s third act might end at an expected place, but “1BR” stands out with how it gets there, and the unique horror along the way. This is one of the greatest books of all time, Its one of those that had me crying my eyes out at the end. So what I don't understand is how its a romantic movie? Sure there was romance in the book but the point was depression and suicide and how not everyone can be saved in those dark times. I hope they do this good just as the book did, but with this, I don't think it is. So basically the entire movie in a few minutes. Good, now I can skip the boring parts. Thompson, Matthew Pope Cast: Bethany Anne Lind, Will Patton, Jimmy Gonzales, Jared Ivers, Jack Andrews Screened at: Critics’ link, NYC, 1/29/20 Opens: February 28, 2020 When you see Leigh Tiller (Bethany Anne Lind) with blood on her hands and cuts on her face, looking over a dead body surrounding by a puddle of blood, you may think for a second that the title is “Blood on Her Hands. ” However among the wise choices made by director Matthew Pope in his debut feature (one previous 15-minutes short, “The Echo Construct, ” is about a technological breakthrough to help solve crimes), is to evoke the view that Leigh is doomed perhaps from the time she was born. Pope’s principal character who is in virtually every scene and delivers a compelling performance, would be better served by a good screenplay. As the situation stands now, the genre movie, a slow burn for the most part until an explosive conclusion, would not in my opinion be well served on the big screen, more likely the type of picture that should do better on cable TV. Pope shows rural America—perhaps the American South given some dialogue about iced tea—as a pit of depravity, the type of place which in this case is home for a group of deplorables. Save for two guys, Leigh’s helper Rey (Jimmy Gonzales) and a parole officer (Tony Vaughn), the characters are all compromised. Leigh’s husband is in jail. Her father, Richard Tiller (Will Patton) is a corrupt sheriff who is estranged from his daughter. Her son Ryan Tiller (Jared Ivers) is on parole, and the dead body, about whom we know little, though we find out that he had a girlfriend Dani Wilson (Elisabeth Röhm), winds up in his unhappy state for reasons not made clear. Notwithstanding the misery of Leigh’s life, she has the decency not to dump the body into the lake, but instead return it to the ground close to the scene—which could prove to be her downfall. In flashbacks, we see Leigh with a drug habit, we know that because of her failing business she could not made court-ordered restitution to the family of a victim beaten and blinded in one eye by Leigh’s son. In the depths of her desperations she offers to take her son on a two-weeks’ vacation (he wants to do white water rafting), an impossible dream for someone with blood on her name. Are these the kinds of people who vote for Trump? Do they vote at all? Have they ever heard of Trump? If you’re a bit city dweller, you’ll get a picture of how many millions of Americans live, people who are employed like Leigh but who are unable to make ends meet—never mind the full employment of which the Republicans are proud. Matthew Pope's debut stars Bethany Anne Lind as a single mother with a fresh corpse to hide. Loosely related to dramas like Frozen River, in which the perils inherent to the working-class crime film are complicated by single motherhood, Matthew Pope's Blood on Her Name watches as a woman's attempt to rid herself of a dead body soon has her wishing she'd just called the cops on herself. A tense debut built around a compelling lead performance by Bethany Anne Lind, it benefits from a couple of graceful storytelling flourishes and a persuasive sense of character. Prospective distributors shouldn't take its Fantasia premiere as a sign that its audience is limited to genre die-hards. Leigh Tiller (Lind) runs a failing auto garage once owned by her now-incarcerated husband. Her widowed father Richard (Will Patton) is the town sheriff, but some rift between the two leaves Leigh fairly stranded in this isolated town; the closest thing she has to a friend may be Rey (Jimmy Gonzales), the only mechanic she's able to keep on payroll. But Rey's duties don't include dead-body disposal. The body is dead from the start. The movie will only explain how he got that way piecemeal over its running time, like a dishonest witness whose story can't hold up under cross-examination. What's clear immediately is that Leigh panics, and the first steps she takes to cover things up doom her to what follows — if only because her humanity keeps her from behaving as a killer would: She has the dead man in a boat and is ready to toss him into a lake when the phone in his pocket chimes with voicemail. Turns out he has a son who's worried that he didn't come home last night. Leigh can't let him and the boy's mother spend their lives wondering if the man just ran off. She risks a lot to leave the body where they will find it; then, far from the evidence, she realizes she may have left bread crumbs that will lead back to her. Lind navigates an emotional minefield as Leigh spends the next day or two trying to dig herself out of this jam. There's her concern for her son Ryan (Jared Ivers), a teenager who's already on probation and may be headed toward his dad's fate; her resentment for the father she's forced to leave Ryan with; and her need to keep Rey from deducing why she's suddenly so irritable and secretive around the garage. In his smaller role, Gonzales stands out as the story's most morally uncompromised character; Rey wants to help before he knows what the problem is, and the actor projects a concern complicated by the things Rey accidentally oversees. (In between attempts to fix the mess she's in, Leigh does some illicit self-medicating. ) If Pope and Don M. Thompson's script is a little coy about how the man in the garage got himself dead, the parallel mystery of what lingers between Leigh and her father unfolds more gracefully. Pope offers nicely staged flashbacks, some drug-induced, in which Leigh witnesses childhood trauma from multiple perspectives. Leigh's present-tense problems may all trace back to her trying to protect others — innocent bystanders, a dead man's loved ones, a son who may soon have two parents in prison. But when the film's title hints at an original sin responsible for all this grief, it's no misdirection.
