It is as much a film about marriage as it is about inner turmoil. Reminded me of Rosemary's Baby in the way its main characters are affected by possibly demonic outsiders. The ups and downs of a crumbling marriage are told through the metaphorical images in the castle. Real mind boggling and exceptional. User Review - 10/10 by Tyler's S Absolutely horrifying. Ingmar Bergman typically has moments in his films where we feel tense, but this is a different breed. This one reminded me of the way Blue Velvet made me feel. The beginning of the film Bergman sets us up to feel like this is a true story of an artist by giving us a quick opening saying that this film is told from the point of view of the wife who was there and read his diary. We see the happiness of Johan and Alma, which is what most movies forget. This is the key because we understand why they are together, we care about them, we want them to succeed. Even though we have this bleak opener we still think there is hope that maybe he will be pulled out of it. But when Alma says that when a man and woman live together long enough that they start to become the same person, and she wants to be that kind of couple, we are instantly pulled into a nightmare. She begins to see the people he's been drawing, the ones he is afraid of. And once this begins there is no way out. After seeing this once I still have so many questions. I want to say that this movies is ultimately about marriage, but I can't grasp exactly what's being said. Of course this film speaks on so many different levels. When we are plagued with guilt, is there a way out of it before it takes control? Johan tells his wife briefly about his, but she learns more through his diaries. And once she gets it out these individual people decide it's time to fully torture him. This is the first film of Ingmar Bergman's I've seen with nudity in it, but it's done with purpose and it's executed perfectly. I don't think I will ever forget when he touches Veronica's naked body and then she starts laughing, then he kisses her and everyone that has haunted him begins to laugh in the background. Perhaps that's another thing Bergman is trying to say: the more you hold in and make your life partner figure out on your own the more humiliating and dominating it becomes. Johan has more than just schizophrenia. This is more along the lines of Shutter Island where he's seeing things not because of a chemical imbalance, but because of guilt. Perfect movie in every way. Can't wait to see it again! User Review - 10/10 by Camden N Hour of the Wolf is the only horror film Ingmar Bergman ever made. And it's amazing. Clearly influenced here by German Expressionism, Bergman and cinematographer Sven Nykvist use exaggerated and stylized light and shadow and deliberately disorienting camera angles to full affect. Bergman's penchant for intense, unblinking close-ups compliments this style of shooting well, and adds a sense of the surreal to the already bizarre happenings. The performances of the castle apparitions. by actors such as Erland Josephson, Bertil Anderberg, and Ingrid Thulin. certainly have a definite expressionist, stylized feel to them as well. This expressionist sensibility also calls for the dramatic externalization of the internal; this fits the subject matter of the film in two ways. First and most obvious, the expression of Johan's inner turmoil breaks the psychological barriers between self and other and between reality and unreality (and later, between life and death) necessary for Bergman to create true horror. Second, and a bit less obvious on the surface, is Bergman's own expression here of the internal realities of his own life. It may seem a bit too on-the-nose, but is there any doubt that Von Sydow's Johan is a stand-in for the writer/director himself? The character is a troubled, brilliant artist whose creative visions and past both interfere with his relationship with his pregnant wife. It is certainly no coincidence that the wife in question is played by Liv Ullmann, who at the time was herself pregnant with Bergman's child; the demands of Bergman's art and personality had threatened for a while to tear the two of them apart. There is clearly a dark side to the creative impulse, and its obsessions can impair life in the real world, whether for fictitious artist Johan Borg or real-life Ingmar Bergman. Perhaps that's why this film strikes such a chord: it feels personal, while at the same time fiercely artistic. A must-see for psychological horror fans. Set in the South Bronx in the sweltering summer of 1977, this psychological drama centers on June (Naomi Watts) an agoraphobic writer four years into spending a hefty advance for her second novel. Tormented by trauma thats somehow linked to her celebrated debut, June smokes and paces, her whole body crackling with distress. Unfolding almost entirely inside the filthy, trash-strewn apartment that once belonged to Junes grandmother, “The Wolf Hour” paints a portrait of mental instability coated in sweat and cigarette ash. Outside the open window, the killer known as Son of Sam terrorizes the dusty streets, where brawls and sirens only intensify Junes paranoia. Now and then, random visitors interrupt her isolation, like her concerned sister ( Jennifer Ehle) an empathetic gigolo (a kind-eyed Emory Cohen) and a wary delivery man ( Kelvin Harrison Jr. from the bodega downstairs. None of these encounters, however, do much to flesh out a character who, despite Wattss magnificently nervy performance, remains a messed-up mystery. More compelling is the atmosphere of near-constant menace that the writer and director, Alistair Banks Griffin, and his cinematographer, Khalid Mohtaseb, strive to maintain. The repeatedly buzzing doorbell that, when answered, reveals only nerve-jangling static; the conversations that take peculiar, bewildering turns. The result is a sometimes punishingly theatrical experiment that teeters on the verge of surreality, transfixing us with the promise of something terrible lurking just beyond those ratty curtains. “ Ghostbusters ” (all week, Eastgate and Star Cinema, and Wednesday at Sundance) — Even though its one of my favorite movies of the 80s, and I vividly remember seeing it at a late-night screening opening night in high school, I kinda hope this 30th anniversary revival tanks. Because we dont need another “Ghostbusters” movie (we really didnt even need the second one) and nobody seems to want it except Dan Ackroyd. (Although an all-female version directed by Paul Feig is certainly the least bad idea out there for a reboot. Anyway, its still “Ghostbusters, ” and still lots of fun to watch. Whenever someone says anything bad about the movie, itll concern its vulgarity, its garishness, maybe its running time—not the actual content of it. And thats a shame, because Wolf —based on a memoir from Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker who made obscene sums of money, spent it obscenely, and crashed down obscenely in the 90s—could have provided an interesting lesson if we actually dug into it. And that lesson is: theres no story here. Oh, director Martin Scorsese, writer Terence Winter, and star Leonardo DiCaprio sure seem to think there is—why else would it be 3 hours long? Yet for all of the raunchiness and absurdity and craziness here, the film ultimately fails because theres insufficient material to sustain a movie. Wolf should have been a one-hour, over-and-done-with Dateline special—‘Oh, look, this guy was wild and crazy and then went to jail. Instead, its an incredibly thin, repetitive movie that spends all of its juicy, raunchy allowance in futile search of dramatic tension or anything resembling a dynamic plot. The movie places Jordan (DiCaprio) in the center of virtually every scene, showing us how he started his career as a shady stockbroker and went up from there, aided by a revolving band of shady characters led by his #2, Donnie (Jonah Hill. Stop me if youve heard this before, but Jordan makes a lot of money, buys fancy cars, develops a drug problem, and ends up with an attractive wife (Margot Robbie, unspectacular. His increasingly illegal activities bring him into contact with various law-enforcement agencies (Kyle Chandler, et al. ) When this project was announced, I worried about familiarity, and Wolf does little to dispel that fear. Its shocking, in fact, the extent to which its a litany of cliches: a rock star who burns bright and fast, drug addictions, reckless henchmen, people dangled off the edge of tall buildings, money hidden in Swiss banks, objectified female roles. The story beats could have been called ahead of time, and so many characters exist merely as types. And youre not going to believe this—seriously, I hope youre sitting down—but the bad boys wife eventually gets fed up with his womanizing. Whenever the movie needs something to do—which is often—it reverts back to its pattern of ‘Jordan makes money-Jordan parties-Jordan makes money-Jordan parties. Theres some amusement in this, but the lack of dramatic conflict puts a damper on everything. The “battle” with the FBI is hilariously underwhelming—Chandler has only one notable scene—and not meant to provoke any sort of tension or sense of impending doom. Nobody serves as a dramatic foil for Jordan. Hes the center of the movies galaxy, and, frankly, hes not interesting enough for that. Nothing here ebbs and flows. There are no ups and downs, no reversals of course or dynamic changes. Its kind of like a Baz Luhrmann movie in the way everything is placed at the same feverish pitch for three exhausting hours. Time magazine put it well: “Youre meant to see every new sex scene and coke aria as a revelation, even though, by the second or third hour, youre likely to think youve been there, seen that—in the same movie, ten minutes ago…Its last two hours are not an enrichment of the first but an instant remake. ” Yet, the movie ultimately sinks because Jordan is one of the least interesting protagonists youve seen on screen lately. There is not a single, solitary compelling trait about him. Why does he want to be so successful? What does he care about (besides hedonism) What drives him? What are his contradictions? If you met him at a party, what would you talk about after you covered all his toys? Due to the dearth of compelling details, Wolf becomes repetitive, and that fact dulls its impact. When Jordan cant drive his car while under the influence of too many Quaaludes, its pretty funny—but it would have been a lot funnier if we hadnt already seen him try to pilot his helicopter while altered an hour before. Similarly, the ‘unreliable narration technique is interesting once or twice but eventually becomes tiresome. In addition, the vignette-heavy plot precludes the movie from ever building to anything, making a point, or shading its characters more deeply than how you initially see them. It relegates Kyle Chandler to the background, yet gives significant subplot-time to an irritating beef between Jonah Hill and another member of the entourage. Theres a seemingly important action late in the film involving a handwritten note that appears meaningful—and yet, has no impact whatsoever on the resolution. The movie was delayed from its original November release and almost missed the Oscars year-end deadline, and, sadly, thats apparent. You can tell in the micro details, such as the disjointed cuts, and with the fact that nearly every scene goes on too long. Other moments just feel ‘off, such as the scene on Jordans boat with the FBI agents—the placement of the silent agent behind Jordan is meant to be ominous, I think, but it doesnt play right. DiCaprio does what he can, trying to combine his free-wheeling spirit with gravitas; he succeeds well enough, but the blandness of his character make it hard for him to resonate too strongly. In fact, given how famously picky he is about his roles, I wonder what could have compelled him to take this role, aside from Scorseses involvement. Elsewhere, Jonah Hill does admirable work in the ‘Joe Pesci role—this far outstrips his turn in Moneyball —and the other actors are all competent. There is enough cant-turn-away enjoyment in the subject matter that you might be able to make it through the whole three hours without getting bored. Certain scenes are funny, such as the Quaaludes overdose or the one where Jordans father (Rob Reiner) questions the guys on how they could have spent 26, 000 on a dinner (“The sides did actually cure cancer, that was the problem. ”) But this is such a misguided movie. Right from the outset, Jordans voice-over narration tells, tells, tells us everything we need, without a whole lot of showing. He breaks it all down: ‘I made a ton of money, I took every drug imaginable, and the FBI was after me. Scorsese loves himself some voice-over (I cant recall many movies with more than Casino) but here it makes for a strangely sterile opening to a film thats supposed to be so involving. If there arent going to be interesting nuances to that tale, if we arent going to care about the characters involved or be swept up in the plot—well, then, once he spells it out in the first ten minutes, youve basically gotten all you need out of this.
